Thirst

From Toadwater Guide

Your thirst is shown as the second (blue) bar in your info center. If yours is not blue, you are thirsty. Thirst affects your ability to gain bonuses to XP in whittling and construction, and also affects how effective you are at chopping down fences.

If yours is blue, it is a measure of your level of thirst (technically, your unthirst) that corresponds with a bonus to your XP.

Thirst Bonuses & Decay

The higher your thirst, the more XP bonus, but the faster the bar empties.

The following applies to construction of fencing:

Quench % Range Bonus Experience Quench Loss Per Item Maximum Items Within Range Average # of Thirst Surges
100%-74.01% 60% 0.55% 46 5
74%-25.01% 30% 0.16% 306 31
25%-1% 15% 0.1% 240 24

There is a total of 592 items of boosted experience at an overall average of 26.25% additional experience from a full thirst meter. This number grows even higher when you include the possibility of thirst surges!

The following applies to whittling any item:

Quench % Range Bonus Experience Quench Loss Per Item Maximum Items Within Range Average # of Thirst Surges
100%-74.01% 60% 0.5% 52 5
74%-25.01% 30% 0.2% 245 25
25%-1% 15% 0.1% 240 23

There is a total of 537 items of boosted experience at an overall average of 26.2% additional experience from a full thirst meter. This number grows even higher when you include the possibility of thirst surges!

Super Thirst Surge Bonuses and Thirst Surge Bonuses

While your thirst meter is blue, there is a 1 in 10 chance to get a thirst surge. A thirst surge provides additional bonuses to XP above and beyond the normal amounts.

On top of the above bonus, a Thirst Surge provides these additional bonuses:

  • Super Thirst Surge Bonus grants 4x gained XP
  • Thirst Surge Bonus grants 2x gained XP

In the logs the percentage listed after a surge is the overall bonus (thirst bonus multiplied by surge bonus) and can be values like 640%, 520%, and 260%.

Thirst surges can occur on both whittling and construction attempts, but super thirst surges only occur while whittling. It is also good to note that super thirst surge bonuses can only be obtained when thirst is above 70%, at which point they convert to normal thirst surges. This makes it a good idea to whittle when thirst is above 70%, and construct when thirst is below 70%, since the opportunity for a super thirst surge is nullified at this point.

Another interesting note about thirst surges is that they will not occur between 1% and 2% thirst while whittling, but they will when constructing. This may make it worthwhile to construct during this time as well.

Other Thirst Bonuses

It is rumored that high thirst gives you more fibers, even 15% more with full thirst, but it has been found hard to prove due to the high gap between minimum and maximum amount of fibers per scutch. Breaking and scutching also costs less health with a full thirst bar but thirst will decrease significantly during B&Sing.

You also gain the experience bonus from thirst during failed whittling and construction attempts. This includes thirst surge bonuses!

*NOTE!!!* Once you begin using thirst, make sure that you always have at least some thirst while whittling or constructing; if your bar completely empties, you will actually begin receiving XP penalties for performing while thirsty!

Thirst Management and effects on XP

As there are three very distinct levels of thirst, with some bonuses crossing between thirst levels (such as the transition from x4 thirst surges to x2 while whittling) this leaves the choice between what level to refresh your thirst. Clearly any amount of thirst quenching is better than none at all, however there are very distinct XP bonuses that can be realized by refreshing your thirst meter before it hits 0%, if you have the resources. I will show the differences that will be realized while whittling 10000 White Pine Wood (Grade 10) without any thirst at all, when fully exhausting your thirst, refreshing thirst at 25%, refreshing at 70%, and refreshing at 75% (Which is very resource intensive, but provides a huge exp boost). Also, this assumes that you are whittling at 100% odds.
